Community Guidelines

Welcome

HaiVL is a Vietnamese-American humor community. We want this to feel like the group chat — funny, honest, friendly, occasionally weird — not like the internet basement. These guidelines exist to make that possible.

By using HaiVL, you agree to follow these guidelines. Violations result in content removal, account suspension, or permanent ban.

What's Welcome

• Memes, jokes, and humor about everyday life
• Code-switching humor (English-Vietnamese mixing)
• Family dynamics: parents, aunties, uncles, kids
• Food content: Vietnamese, pan-Asian, fusion, diaspora interpretations
• Local community content (your city, neighborhood, restaurant scene)
• Cultural observations from diaspora perspective
• Aesthetic photography in everyday settings
• Original content or properly credited reposts
• Comments that add to the joke or conversation
• Friendly disagreement and discussion

What Requires More Thought (Restricted)

Some content is allowed but requires more care. Moderators may review before publishing or hold for context:

• Ethnic humor within our community is fine; punching down at other ethnicities is not
• Mild profanity as flavor is fine; profanity as the entire post is not
• Flirty and romantic content is fine; explicit sexual content is not
• Body image and fitness content with positive framing is fine; weight-shaming is not
• Mental health venting is fine; describing self-harm methods is not
• Alcohol culture content is fine; glamorizing dangerous drinking is not
• Light political humor that's non-partisan is fine; attacks on named officials are not
• Religious cultural references are fine; mocking specific faiths is not
• Celebrity fan content is fine; defamation of real people is not

What's Not Allowed (Will Be Removed)

Sexual content

• Nudity (full or partial, including see-through clothing)
• Sexually suggestive poses, lingerie photography, fetish content
• Sexual acts depicted, described, or implied
• Adult industry promotion (cam sites, OnlyFans, escort services)
• Content that sexualizes minors in any form (immediate ban + report)
• "Barely SFW" content with clear titillation intent

Violence and harm

• Graphic violence, gore, blood, injury imagery
• Animal cruelty or abuse
• Self-harm imagery or methods
• Suicide methods (awareness and support content is allowed)
• Eating disorder promotion
• Drug use glorification (recipes, dealing, snorting jokes)
• Weapon promotion or modification tutorials
• Real fight videos featuring identifiable people

Hate and harassment

• Hate speech against any ethnic, religious, sexual orientation, or national origin group
• Slurs (racial, homophobic, transphobic, ableist)
• Doxxing (sharing real names, addresses, phone numbers, workplaces)
• Targeted harassment of specific users or external individuals
• Revenge posting or leaked private content
• Body-shaming, slut-shaming, fat-shaming of identifiable individuals
• Mocking disabilities or medical conditions of identifiable individuals
• Coordinated brigading from external platforms

Political and historical

• Insults toward named historical figures of any country
• Defamation of named living political officials
• Holocaust denial, genocide denial, historical atrocity revisionism
• Election misinformation
• Medical, vaccine, or COVID misinformation
• Conspiracy theories presented as fact (QAnon, flat earth, anti-vax)
• Advocacy of violence against specific groups

Spam and scams

• Multi-level marketing (Amway, Mary Kay, Herbalife, etc.)
• Pyramid schemes, get-rich-quick promises
• Phishing links, malware, suspicious URL shorteners
• Cryptocurrency wallet scams, NFT pumps, fake giveaways
• Gambling site links
• "Asian dating" predatory ads
• Fake reviews, manipulated voting, vote rings
• Account selling, follower-buying coordination

Copyright violations

• Full reposts of professional photography without permission
• Pirated movie/TV clips beyond fair-use length
• Watermarked creator content reposted without permission
• Trademark violations (counterfeit promotion, fake branded merchandise)

Memes and remixed content are welcome. If a creator or rights-holder disputes specific content, we honor DMCA takedowns within 48 hours.

Voting Rules

• One vote per user per post
• Don't create multiple accounts to manipulate votes
• Don't organize vote brigades on external platforms
• Don't ask for votes in exchange for anything

Detected manipulation results in vote nullification and possible account suspension.

If You Break the Rules

• First violation: content removed with a notification explaining the rule
• Repeated minor violations or single severe violation: 7-day posting timeout
• Continued violations or extreme cases: permanent ban with IP and email block
• Illegal content (CSAM, real threats of violence): immediate ban + report to law enforcement

How to Report Content

If you see content that violates these guidelines:

• Use the "Report" button on the post or comment
• Select the violation category
• Add context if needed
• Submit

Moderators review reports typically within 24 hours. We do not reveal who reported content.

Appeals

If your content was removed or your account was suspended and you believe it was a mistake:

• Email appeals@haivl.org within 14 days
• Include your username and link to the removed content
• Explain why you believe the decision was wrong
• Be polite — moderators are human

A different moderator (or the founder) will review your appeal. Reinstatement is possible if context was misunderstood.

Our Commitment

We try to apply these rules consistently and fairly, but we are human and we make mistakes. If you think we got something wrong, appeal politely. We may or may not change our mind, but we will read it.

We will not remove content just because someone is offended. We remove content that violates these specific rules. The rules exist because they protect community quality, monetization eligibility, and legal safety — and because they make HaiVL a better place to be.
